Bornean orangutans can make an exhibit feel surprisingly quiet and thoughtful. Spend a few minutes watching one and you may see it carefully pull apart leaves, inspect food with its fingers, or move slowly through the trees using its long arms. Their reddish hair is striking from a distance, but the details become more interesting up close. Broad hands and flexible feet help them grip branches, while their deliberate movements show just how well suited they are to life in the forest canopy. Young orangutans often add plenty of energy, climbing, swinging and testing whatever they can reach before settling beside their mother. Adults can spend long periods resting, grooming or simply observing what is happening around them. Bornean orangutans are also known for making simple nests high in trees, where they sleep at night and sometimes rest during the day. Watching one solve a small problem with its hands can be a reminder that intelligence does not always look hurried or dramatic.
