Bonobos can be surprisingly expressive to watch. Spend a few minutes near their habitat and you may see individuals grooming one another, chasing through the space, inspecting something with intense curiosity, or simply sitting together while keeping an eye on the group. Their long arms and agile movements make climbing look effortless, but some of the most interesting moments happen on the ground, where bonobos walk upright for short stretches and interact face to face. Social life is a big part of what makes them worth watching. Younger bonobos often turn almost anything into a game, while adults use touch, grooming and vocal sounds to maintain relationships. Their close resemblance to chimpanzees can make visitors look twice, yet bonobos have their own distinctive look and famously complex social dynamics. Native only to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, they are also among the rare great apes visitors can encounter outside Africa.
