The blackspot piranha is a fish that rewards a close look because its most interesting features are not always obvious from across an aquarium. Its deep, laterally compressed body gives it a sturdy shape, while the dark spot behind the gill cover helps identify it. Watch the mouth as the fish moves and you may catch a glimpse of the sharp teeth tucked behind the lips. In an exhibit, blackspot piranhas often move together, changing direction quickly when another fish approaches or food enters the water. They are not simply constantly hunting, though. Much of their time can be spent swimming calmly, exploring their surroundings, or picking at available food. Native to freshwater rivers and floodplain habitats across parts of South America, they are adapted to warm, often slow-moving waters. The combination of quick group movements and sudden changes in direction makes a school especially interesting to watch. A few minutes at the tank can reveal how coordinated and alert these fish are.
