Bearded emperor tamarins are small monkeys with a feature that is almost impossible to miss: a long white moustache sweeping outward from the face. Once they start moving, though, attention quickly shifts to their speed. These tamarins scamper along branches, leap between perches, and use their long tails for balance as they navigate above the ground. Watch their hands and you may notice claw-like nails on most fingers, which help them grip tree trunks and branches while searching for fruit, insects, nectar, and other foods. Family groups stay in frequent contact through calls and scent marking, so there can be plenty of activity when several animals share a habitat. Emperor tamarin fathers also play an unusually active role in raising young, often carrying infants and returning them to the mother for nursing. Between bursts of movement, one may pause on a branch long enough for that extraordinary moustache to take center stage again.
