Atlantic puffins have an unmistakable look, but their behavior is what makes them fun to watch. Their bright orange-and-gray bills stand out most during the breeding season, while their compact bodies and short wings can make takeoff look surprisingly energetic. At an aquarium or wildlife destination, watch a puffin move through the water. It uses its wings almost like flippers, diving and steering underwater in pursuit of small fish. On land, those bright feet and quick steps give the bird a very different appearance. Puffins can also carry several small fish at once, holding them crosswise in the bill while catching more. During the breeding season, they nest in burrows on grassy cliffs and islands along the North Atlantic. Away from the breeding season, their bills become less brightly colored and they spend much of their time at sea. A close view lets you appreciate the fine details of the face and bill that are easy to miss when a puffin is sitting farther away.
