Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin

Native Range
Temperate and tropical Atlantic waters

Atlantic bottlenose dolphins rarely stay still for long, which makes watching them a lesson in noticing small details. One moment they may glide past the viewing window in a tight group, then suddenly accelerate, turn, or surface together. Their social lives are especially fun to follow. Dolphins rub against companions, play, communicate with whistles, and frequently shift between smaller groups. Young calves often swim tucked beside their mothers, using a position that helps them keep pace. Look closely at the dolphins' bodies and you may notice scratches, scars, or distinctive markings that make individuals easier to recognize. Much of their world is shaped by sound. Bottlenose dolphins produce rapid echolocation clicks to investigate their surroundings and locate food, even when visibility is poor. During feeding, they can cooperate to herd fish before taking turns pursuing them. Spend a few minutes watching and their movements begin to look less random, revealing a busy stream of communication, play, and social interaction.
