Alaskan sea otters are wonderfully busy animals, even when they appear to be simply floating on their backs. At an aquarium, watch the paws closely as an otter uses them to groom its fur, handle food, or investigate an object. That thick fur is essential in cold northern waters because sea otters rely on it, rather than a heavy layer of blubber, to stay warm. Feeding can be especially fun to watch. An otter may crack open a shellfish with a stone held against its chest, then tuck the tool away for another use. They also spend plenty of time diving and searching along the seafloor for crabs, clams, sea urchins, and other prey. When resting, groups may float together in calm water, sometimes wrapping themselves in kelp to avoid drifting away. Native to coastal Alaska and the northern Pacific, Alaskan sea otters are perfectly suited to cold marine habitats. A close view often reveals just how much work goes into maintaining that famously fluffy coat.
