African savanna elephants are the kind of animals that reward a few extra minutes of watching. Their size grabs attention first, but smaller movements soon take over. A trunk may curl around a branch, investigate the ground, spray water, or delicately pick up something surprisingly tiny. Their huge ears are constantly useful too, fanning outward to help release body heat and shifting with the elephant's mood and attention. Around a herd, watch how individuals stay in contact. Mothers guide calves, youngsters squeeze between larger animals, and trunks frequently reach toward companions during social interactions. Mud and dust are more than messy fun. Elephants coat themselves to help protect their skin from the sun and biting insects. African savanna elephants naturally travel across grasslands and open woodlands, sometimes covering considerable distances in search of food and water. Even in quieter moments, their constant touching, sniffing, feeding, and listening reveals how much is happening within the herd.
