Adélie penguins bring plenty of movement to a cold-weather habitat. A group may shuffle across the rocks, porpoise through the water, or suddenly gather together before several birds head off in different directions. Watch them underwater and you'll see how different they look in motion. Their compact bodies become streamlined as they use their flipper-like wings to propel themselves through the water, while their feet help with steering. On land, those same penguins can look much less graceful, especially when they hurry across uneven ground. Adélies are excellent swimmers and spend much of their time at sea searching for food such as krill and small fish. Their crisp black-and-white plumage and white eye rings make them easy to recognize, particularly when several birds are standing together. Native to Antarctica and nearby islands, they are closely tied to cold coastal environments and sea ice. At a zoo or aquarium, watching a group switch between energetic swimming and comical waddling gives a good sense of how well adapted they are to two very different worlds.
